I discovered Simon Wardley's work on the internet a couple years ago and was immediately intrigued by the visual mappings he'd create to communicate various patterns that I was also seeing in my consulting work with software companies and non-software companies trying to become software companies.

Wardley Maps are a great tool for mapping an existing state and identifying opportunities for strategic movement based on situational awareness, only derived by a high-resolution understanding of a domain and environment.
