Immutability as a Foundational Information Substrate

The Feedback Loop

These effects compound:

Costlier bits → more careful writing → higher signal quality ↓ Transparency → observable behavior → accountability ↓ Immutability → permanent record → reputation as history ↓ Better governance → more trust in the system → more adoption ↓ More adoption → more economic activity on-chain → more valuable bits ↓ More valuable bits → even more careful writing → ...

This is a positive feedback loop between technical architecture and social behavior. The Unix filesystem properties (append-only log, world-readable, content-addressed) create economic incentives that shape governance, which shapes economics, which shapes behavior.

Beer saw this: the system's architecture IS the governance structure. You don't need policy to enforce transparency if the medium is transparent by construction. You don't need compliance officers if the audit trail is automatic. You don't need trust if the record is verifiable.
