http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacque_Fresco In 1948 Jacque released a modular aluminum house called the "Trend House" which was featured in Architectural Record. Amazing. It'd be interesting to do some follow up and see exactly what happened with this and see why it didn't stick.
