I worked in an Auditor's Office for 6 years, and was CFO at a Charter School for 2. In other words, I did numbers stuff. And it gets tedious, but isn't bad if you know the fundamentals. Finance professionals make an art out of high-finance; sophisticated, probabilities, statistics and such. I've met Accountants whose approaches span the spectrum; treating numbers as rigorous administrivia (audit) to aesthetic obsession (digital hoarding). I ended up sharing the notes below with staff as a quick way to explain (and remind again and again) the very basics of numbers. But leveling-up staff knowledge around finance is really what paid dividends in the long run.
