So given technological advancement, when does life optimization begin?
The New Economics Foundation in the UK is exploring alternatives to GDP and traditional forms of capital accounting with metrics about sustainability metrics and a societal index for Well-Being.  
It's evident that our current state of politics is antiquated and out-of-date.  It's time to move beyond a black and white, two-party system and begin to optimize our public representation (through educated voting) and embrace our own role in progress as a nation.  I'd argue that the current 'resolution' of democracy is relatively low and primitive, "2bit" as far as systems go. In time, the democratic spirit will refine as long as information is openly disseminated.  In that time, technology will permeate people's lives and thus politics and thus, their political lives.  A more meaningful and immersive experience is possible, thus it will be sought after and attained.  Visions of Utopia must start as visions.  In time, clarity of vision amongst people, and more importantly, across groups, communities, cities, and societies becomes a way to transcend the current paradigm of political driven discourse, empty of real-human meaning.  The mind-numbing air of bureaucracy involved in governing ceremony and day to day operations in government is evidence that systematic biases are preempting human goals.

Beginning to move beyond parties.  Cognitive studies show we can typically hold 5-9 items in mind at a time.  When the number of parties exceeds this amount, the coherence of what could be thought of as a 'system' begins to deteriorate.
